What Legendary Equipment Is

Legendary equipment arrived in Season 20 and got a second tier in Season 21. It sits above the mastery gear ladder, and it works differently from everything below it: a legendary item does not just have better base numbers, it carries an extra bonus option line that ordinary items cannot roll at all.

That bonus line is what people are actually chasing. Everything else about the item — excellent options, luck, skill — behaves the way it always has.

The Bonus Option Lines

The server defines exactly six bonus options, split between armour and weapons:

Applies toOption
Armour, shieldsIncrease defense by +X
Armour, shieldsIncrease extra defense by +X
WeaponsIncrease all stats by +X
WeaponsNuke (+X)
WeaponsBolt (+X)
WeaponsAoE (+X) attack power

Armour gets defence and extra defence. Weapons get all stats plus a three-part attack line — Nuke, Bolt and AoE attack power — which the client displays as one combined row.

How Often a Legendary Item Actually Gets a Bonus

Every legendary item rolls once for a bonus option, and most of the time it comes up empty. The rates differ by slot — these are the live values, not the example numbers in the file’s documentation comment:

SlotNo bonusTier 1Tier 2Tier 3
Armour65.00%20.00%10.00%5.00%
Shields70.00%17.50%10.00%2.50%
Fairy shields70.00%17.50%10.00%2.50%
Lancer shields70.00%17.50%10.00%2.50%
Weapons70.00%17.50%10.00%2.50%

So 65% of legendary armour and 70% of everything else roll no bonus option at all. A legendary item is not automatically an upgrade — roughly two times in three it is a legendary-labelled item with nothing extra on it.

Armour is also the only slot with a meaningfully better top end: 5.0% for tier 3 on armour against 2.5% everywhere else, double the chance for the same effort. If you are hunting a tier 3 bonus, hunt it on armour.

How Strong the Bonus Is When It Lands

Separately from whether you get a bonus, the server picks how large it is. LegendaryItemBonusOption.xml defines three value sets per slot and weights them:

SlotWeakest value setMiddleStrongest
Armour50%33%17%
Shields50%33%17%
Fairy shields50%33%17%
Lancer shields50%33%17%
Weapons50%33%17%

The split is the same everywhere — about 50 / 33 / 17 — so once a bonus does appear, one in six is the strongest version. Combine the two rolls and a top-value tier 3 bonus on a weapon is genuinely rare.

Legendary Set Options

Legendary weapons and shields also carry their own set-option pool, separate from the bonus line. Each entry is equally weighted, so every option in the list is as likely as any other.

Weapons

OptionChance
Increase Attack (Wizardry) Speed by X20.00%
Obtains (Life/8) when monster is killed20.00%
Obtains (Mana/8) when monster is killed20.00%
a stat increases by X every 20Lv20.00%
Increase a stat by X20.00%

Shields

OptionChance
Reflects X% of Damage20.00%
Increases Defense Success Rate by X%20.00%
Increases Maximum Life by X20.00%
Increases Maximum Mana by X20.00%
Decreases Damage by X%20.00%

The weapon pool is the interesting one: obtains life when a monster is killed and obtains mana when a monster is killed are farming options, while attack speed and the per-20-levels scaling line are combat options. All at the same odds, so a re-roll is a genuine coin flip between playstyles.

Legendary Sets

The server defines 39 legendary set combinations. They are unusually small:

Pieces requiredNumber of sets
17
230
32

Most legendary sets are one or two pieces, not the five-piece armour sets you know from the mastery ladder. That changes how you gear: you are not saving toward a complete set, you are picking up individual legendary pieces and pairing them.

What This Means in Practice

  • Do not assume legendary beats mastery. Two thirds of legendary items roll no bonus option at all, so a well-rolled mastery item often wins.
  • Chase tier 3 on armour. Double the tier 3 rate of any other slot.
  • Tier 3 is a long project. 2.5%% on a weapon, and then only one in six of those rolls the strongest value set.
  • Re-rolls change playstyle, not just numbers. The weapon set pool mixes life-on-kill farming options with pure combat options at identical odds.
  • Think in pairs. Legendary sets are mostly one or two pieces, so a single good drop can already complete a set bonus.

Legendary Equipment FAQ

What is legendary equipment in MU Online?

Gear introduced in Season 20, with a second tier added in Season 21. Its defining feature is an extra bonus option line — defence and extra defence on armour, all stats plus a Nuke/Bolt/AoE attack line on weapons — that normal items cannot roll.

How rare is a legendary bonus option?

On armour: 65%% no bonus, 20%% tier 1, 10%% tier 2, 5%% tier 3. On weapons, shields, fairy shields and lancer shields: 70%% no bonus, 17.5%% tier 1, 10%% tier 2, 2.5%% tier 3.

Do weapons or armour get legendary bonuses more often?

Armour. It has a 35%% chance of some bonus against 30%% elsewhere, and twice the tier 3 rate (5%% against 2.5%%).

Is legendary gear always better than mastery gear?

No. Because most legendary items roll no bonus option, a well-rolled mastery item frequently outperforms a plain legendary one. The legendary label guarantees the chance of a bonus, not the bonus itself.

How many pieces are in a legendary set?

Most are one or two pieces. The server defines 39 set combinations and the large majority need fewer than three items, unlike the five-piece mastery armour sets.

What options can a legendary weapon roll?

Attack or wizardry speed, life on kill, mana on kill, a stat that scales every 20 levels, and a flat stat increase — all at equal odds on this configuration.
