MU Online Socket System – Seeds, Spheres & Seed Spheres
The socket system (Season 4) lets you build your own item options: socketed weapons and armor carry 1–5 empty slots that accept Seed Spheres — crafted gems whose options you choose by element. A well-planned five-socket weapon out-damages same-tier excellent gear, which is why socket sets ruled the meta from Season 4 through Season 8 and remain endgame on those servers.

Extracts and mounts Seeds into sockets

Seed Sphere creation
How Sockets Work
| Piece | Role |
|---|---|
| Socket item | Season 4+ weapon/armor lines with 1–5 sockets rolled at drop — more sockets, exponentially rarer |
| The option itself — extracted per element with a random option from that element's pool | |
| The mount — grades Mono to Penta; higher grades strengthen the seed's value | |
| Seed fused into Sphere — the finished gem that mounts into a socket |
The Six Seed Elements

| Element | Option pool (highlights) | Best on |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | ATK/WIZ increase, attack speed, min/max damage | Weapons — the damage core |
| Lightning | Excellent DMG +, critical DMG +, crit/exc rates | Weapons — the burst multiplier |
| Ice | Skill attack, HP/SD-on-kill drains | Weapons — sustain and skill lines |
| Water | Defense +, block rate, damage reduction | Armor — the mitigation core |
| Earth | STR/stat +, HP increase | Armor — raw stat padding |
| Wind | HP/AG recovery, max HP/AG/SD | Armor — regen and resource pools |
The Crafting Chain
+
→
A Seed fused into a Sphere makes a Seed Sphere — the thing you actually mount.| Step | Where | Recipe |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Extract Seed | Seed Master (Elbeland) | Excellent or ancient item (level 4+ with option) + Chaos + Creation + Harmony → random Seed of chosen element (~80%) |
| 2. Craft Sphere fusion | Seed Researcher | Seed + Sphere + Chaos + Creation → Seed Sphere (~80%) |
| 3. Mount | Seed Researcher | Seed Sphere + socketed item → option installed (100%); removal destroys the sphere |
Seed options are random within the element — the grind is rolling the line you want (e.g. Lightning "Critical DMG" vs a filler). Unwanted seed spheres are re-rollable only by replacing them.
Making a Socket Item Yourself
Socket items drop, but you can also convert one. Take a qualifying base item at +11 to +15 to the Chaos Machine with 10,000,000 Zen. On this Season 21 configuration 118 base items can be converted, and the result rolls its socket count — most come out with a single socket.
| Step | Detail |
|---|---|
| Input | One of 118 base items at +11–+15, sockets empty, 10,000,000 Zen |
| Success | 80% — a failure destroys the item |
| Socket count rolled | 1 socket 85% · 2 sockets 10% · 3 sockets 5% · 4–5 not possible from the mix |
| Extras | Skill 20% · Luck 20% on the result |
| Convertible slots | Armors 19, Pants 19, Boots 19, Gloves 18, Helmets 17, Staffs 8, Shields 6, Swords 6, Maces and Scepters 3, Bows and Crossbows 2, Spears 1 |
Socket count on dropped items
Items that drop as socket items roll their sockets from a per-category table. Values are the raw rate out of 10,000 for each socket slot — note how much worse Spears are, and that necklaces cap at three.
| Item type | 1 sock | 2 sock | 3 sock | 4 sock | 5 sock |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swords, Axes, Maces & Scepters, Bows & Crossbows, Staffs, Shields, Helmets, Armors, Pants, Gloves, Boots | 60.0% | 40.0% | 30.0% | 15.0% | 7.5% |
| Spears | 40.0% | 20.0% | 15.0% | 3.0% | 1.5% |
| Necklaces | 70.0% | 25.0% | 5.0% | — | — |
What every operation costs
| Operation | Zen | Success |
|---|---|---|
| Extract a Seed | 1,000,000 | — |
| Fuse Seed + Sphere | 1,000,000 | — |
| Mount a Seed Sphere | 1,000,000 | — |
| Remove a Seed Sphere | 1,000,000 | 100% |
Removal is guaranteed on this configuration, but it destroys the seed sphere — you are paying to empty the socket, not to recover the sphere. A weapon is limited to 10 total sockets across the character.
Socket Bonus Options – the Exact Element Orders
Mount three seed spheres in a specific element order and the item gains an extra bonus line on top of the individual seed options. The order is what matters, not just the elements — Fire › Lightning › Ice gives attack, the same three reversed gives skill damage. The bonus value scales with the lowest seed sphere step among the three, so all-step-5 spheres give the top figure.
| Bonus | Socket order | Applies to | Step 1 | Step 2 | Step 3 | Step 4 | Step 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Increases Attack | Fire › Lightning › Ice | Swords, Axes, Maces and Scepters, Spears, Bows and Crossbows | +11 | +22 | +33 | +44 | +55 |
| Increase Skill Damage | Lightning › Ice › Fire | Swords, Axes, Maces and Scepters, Spears, Bows and Crossbows | +11 | +22 | +33 | +44 | +55 |
| Increases Attack Power and Magical Damage | Fire › Lightning › Ice | Staffs, Maces and Scepters, Bows and Crossbows | +5 | +10 | +15 | +20 | +25 |
| Increase Skill Damage | Lightning › Ice › Fire | Staffs, Maces and Scepters, Bows and Crossbows | +11 | +22 | +33 | +44 | +55 |
| Increases Defense | Water › Earth › Wind | Shields, Helmets, Armors, Pants, Gloves, Boots, Jewel and Misc | +24 | +27 | +30 | +33 | +36 |
| Increases MAX Life | Earth › Wind › Water | Shields, Helmets, Armors, Pants, Gloves, Boots, Jewel and Misc | +29 | +31 | +33 | +35 | +37 |
So: weapons want Fire › Lightning › Ice for flat attack or Lightning › Ice › Fire for skill damage; armour wants Water › Earth › Wind for defence or Earth › Wind › Water for HP. Staffs, scepters and bows use the lower attack/magic line instead of the pure weapon one.
Special Options – the Full-Set Bonuses
Separate from the three-socket bonus, the server counts every seed element you have equipped across all socket items. Hit the required spread and a special option activates. These are the end-game socket goals and need a full set of socketed gear, not one weapon.
| Special option | Value | Fire | Water | Ice | Wind | Lightning | Earth | Seeds needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Double damage rate Increase | +3% | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 6 total |
| Opponent Defensibility ignorance Attack | +1% | 1 | 3 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 11 total |
Double damage rate needs just one of each element — six sockets spread over your gear, very reachable. Opponent defence ignore needs eleven seeds in a fixed spread and is the real chase.
Best Setups (Classic Meta)
Weapons: Fire (ATK) + Lightning (Critical DMG) + Lightning (Excellent DMG) forms the damage triangle; slots four and five go to Ice skill lines or more Fire. Armor: Water defense + Earth HP as the base, Wind regen to taste — and spread elements across pieces to hit set bonus sequences. Budget rule: socket the weapon first; a bonus-active weapon carries mediocre armor far better than the reverse.
Every Seed Option – Values by Seed Sphere Level
The complete option list from the server socket file: each seed element has 5–9 possible options (the seed level column is which option the seed rolled), and the bonus grows with the seed sphere step (1–20, see sphere upgrade) shown across the columns. Values marked % are percentages; the others are flat.

Seed Sphere Upgrade – Step 1 to 20
Above the classic five levels, Season 11+ servers let you push a seed sphere step by step. Each upgrade takes the sphere you want to raise, one more sphere of the same step (any element) as fuel, a stack of Sphere Upgrade Runes and Zen. On failure the fuel sphere, runes and Zen are lost; the main sphere keeps its step. Values from the server’s seed-sphere upgrade file, identical for all six elements.

Straight-line cost from step 1 to 20: 204 Sphere Upgrade Runes, 19 spare spheres and 703 M Zen at 100% luck; with the listed success rates budget about 31 attempts (and that many fuel spheres) for the full ladder. The rate holds near 90% up to step 10, then slides to 36% for the last step — most players stop between step 10 and 15.

FAQ
Where do socket items drop?
Season 4+ maps — Raklion era onwards, bosses (Selupan is the classic socket boss) and event boxes.
Can I remove a seed sphere?
Yes, but the sphere is destroyed — the socket empties for a new one.
Do sockets and excellent options coexist?
No — socket items are their own family; they cannot be excellent or ancient.
Is socket gear still endgame on modern servers?
It stays relevant through mid-seasons, then mastery-tier gear takes over (Season 12+). On Season 4–6 servers it is the ceiling.
